Premium Photography Squarespace Template: What Your Money Actually Buys

The short answer: A premium photography Squarespace template runs on exactly the same platform as the free ones. All roughly 200 Squarespace templates are included with a subscription and all of them are Squarespace 7.1 with Fluid Engine, so you are not buying a faster engine or a feature the free templates lack. You are buying four things — a finished page count, prebuilt structures you would otherwise assemble, a support term, and a licence — and they are worth between $99 and $399 depending on which shop you buy from.

Here is each of those four, priced.

What premium buys, and what it does not

The platform underneath is identical, and this is not a small point

Squarespace 7.1 is one engine. Every template in the library is a starting configuration of that engine — a set of section presets, a colour palette, a typography scale and some page structures. There is no template-level code, no template-specific feature set, and no way for one 7.1 template to do something another 7.1 template cannot be configured to do.

This has three consequences that shops rarely spell out.

First, "this template has beautiful galleries" means nothing. Gallery sections are a platform feature with six layouts, available on every 7.1 site. So are Portfolio pages, Fluid Engine, colour themes and everything else.

Second, you can switch look without switching template. Site Styles will take any 7.1 template to any visual outcome given enough time. What you are paying for is the time, not the possibility.

Third, template choice does not affect speed. Across 54 Squareko-built client sites measured in August 2026 (Playwright/Chromium lab test, cloud datacentre, unthrottled network and CPU, single run per site, load-only CLS), 53 of 54 run Squarespace 7.1 and median mobile LCP was 2.01s with median page weight at 3.0 MB across 93 requests. Those are lab figures, not field data. What separated the fast sites from the slow ones in that set was image handling, not which template they started from.

If a shop's sales copy implies otherwise, that is the claim to be sceptical of.

What premium buys: the page count

This is the most concrete difference and the easiest to check before you buy.

A free Squarespace template gives you a homepage and a handful of sample pages. A premium photography template gives you a finished site. Squareko's photography templates ship 12 pages each:

  • ColorFlick — Home, Home 2, Weddings, Engagements, Portraits, Photo Booth, Gallery, Portfolio, Journal, Inquire, Freebie, plus a Style Guide page and a 404 page. Verified on the ColorFlick demo.

  • Aura Capture — Home, Home 2, About, Weddings, Engagements, Events, Gallery, Portfolio, FAQs, Contact, Freebie, plus a Style Guide page and a 404 page. No blog. Verified on the Aura Capture demo.

Across the full Squareko range the real counts run 9 to 15 pages depending on the template — Justify is the smallest at 9, WeDecorefy the largest at 15. Ask any shop for the actual page list before buying. A "10-page template" that is one homepage and nine section variants is not a 10-page template.

Why page count is the number that matters for a photographer specifically: each discipline page is a separate URL that can rank for a separate query. Four service pages is four ranking surfaces. Rebuilding those four pages from a free template — writing the sections, matching the styles, setting up the enquiry route on each — is roughly a week of evenings. That week is most of what you are paying for.

What premium buys: the structures you would otherwise build

Beyond raw page count, three structures recur in premium photography templates and almost never in free ones.

A Style Guide page. A live page in the site holding every heading level, button, colour theme and section type in one place. Every Squareko template includes one. It sounds trivial and it is the single most useful page on a handed-over site, because six months later you can see exactly which styles exist rather than guessing. Most shops do not include one.

A per-discipline enquiry route. Not one Contact page, but an enquiry form or CTA sitting at the bottom of each service page, prefilled or labelled for that service. Building this manually means duplicating and rewiring form blocks on four pages.

A 404 page and a Freebie/lead-magnet page. Small, unglamorous, and the two pages nobody builds voluntarily.

Every Squareko template also ships 150+ pre-designed sections you can drop into any page. That is the mechanism by which a template stays useful after launch, and it is a fair description of what a section library is for.

What premium buys: support terms, which vary enormously

This is where shops genuinely differ, and it is worth comparing before price.

Big Cat Creative's lifetime support is a genuine advantage over our 60 days, and it is worth saying so. If you expect to be asking questions two years from now, that is a real reason to buy there instead. Sixty days covers launch; it does not cover a redesign in 2028.

What no shop's support covers is customisation. Support means "the template is not behaving as delivered". It does not mean "please change the layout for me". Squareko's is explicit on this and most shops are the same. Budget separately if you want changes.

What premium buys: a licence — and what the licence excludes

The single most commonly missed obligation in this entire category:

The demo images are not licensed for your live site. Every template you buy, from any shop, ships with placeholder photography that belongs to someone else. You must replace every one of them before launch. For a photographer this is usually fine — your photographs are the whole point — but it bites on the About page, the 404 page, the Journal thumbnails and any lifestyle imagery in the footer, all of which people forget.

The licence itself covers commercial use of the design on one site. It does not entitle you to resell the template, and it does not transfer to a second site.

Real prices across the premium Squarespace template shops

Verified from the shops' own listings in August 2026. Prices change; check on the day.

Three honest observations from that table.

$249 is the middle of the market, not the cheap end. Anyone telling you premium templates cost $99 is describing single landing pages or sale prices.

Price does not track quality in this category. A $599 template and a $198 template run the same engine. What varies is page count, support term and whether installation is included.

The free column is not a joke. For a photographer with three services and no blog, a free Squarespace 7.1 template plus a weekend is a legitimate answer, and it is the right one often enough that any shop refusing to say so is selling rather than advising.

Delivery: the difference nobody compares on

Most template shops send you files. You download a package, follow a PDF, and paste sections in.

Squareko templates are delivered as a Squarespace contributor invitation. Our published wording: "there are no external files to download or upload, unlike WordPress themes." Two routes exist — a new 12-month trial site we build and then transfer ownership of, with your existing site staying live throughout; or installation onto your existing site, a paid add-on that is "a fully manual process… typically takes around 48 hours".

Big Cat Creative also offers installation onto an existing site within 48 hours. Applet Studio prices setup as a separate service.

If you have never built a Squarespace site before, delivery method is worth more than a $50 price difference. If you have built four, it is worth nothing.

The honest limits

All sales are final. Squareko's policy is that digital products "cannot be returned, exchanged, or refunded under any circumstances." Most template shops are the same. This is the reason to use the demo properly first — click every page, resize to mobile, check whether the pages you need exist. A demo walkthrough is fifteen minutes and it is the only due diligence available to you.

The Squarespace subscription is separate and required. The template price covers the design and its use only. Squareko recommends the Business plan and templates work on Basic; buyers get 20% off their first year through us.

A template will not make your photographs load faster. That is decided by upload size, gallery length and layout width, and it is covered in the gallery mechanics guide.

A template will not rank. Pages rank. A 12-page template gives you 12 chances instead of four; it does not do the work.

Where to go next

  • Stripping a template back — minimal Squarespace templates for photographers

  • Colour, if you want a bold palette — colourful photography Squarespace templates

  • The full cluster — Squarespace templates for photographers

  • The category-wide version of this question — are premium Squarespace templates worth it

If you have three services, a working camera roll and a free weekend, buy nothing. A free Squarespace 7.1 template will get you live, and the four levers that make it look considered are Site Styles decisions you can make in an afternoon.

Buying makes sense in one specific situation: when the page architecture you need — a page per discipline, an enquiry route on each, a style guide you can hand to whoever maintains the site next — is a week of work you do not want to do, and you would rather spend that week shooting. That is what the premium Squarespace templates in our shop are listed by: full page structure, one price, and the demo password published so you can walk every page before you decide.
